Winter Weather Tips
Dear DHA Residents,
As we embrace the winter season, your safety and well-being remain our top priority. To help you and your household stay safe and comfortable during the colder months, we've compiled these essential winter weather tips:
Staying Warm Indoors
- Dress in layers, even while indoors, to retain body heat.
- Use space heaters safely: place them on flat, non-flammable surfaces, keep them at least 3 feet away from flammable items, and turn them off when unattended.
- Seal drafts with weather stripping or draft stoppers to keep warm air inside your home.
Preparing for Winter Weather
- Stock up on essentials such as blankets, warm clothing, and non-perishable food items.
- Charge all electronic devices in advance to prepare for potential power outages.
- Choose flashlights or battery-powered lanterns for lighting during outages; candles pose a fire hazard.
- Drip faucets in the kitchen and bathroom to avoid undue pressure on pipes
Walking and Driving Safely
- Watch out for icy sidewalks and driveways. Use salt or sand to prevent slips.
- Avoid driving in icy or snowy conditions if possible. If driving is necessary, slow down, allow extra time for stopping, and keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle (e.g., blanket, flashlight, extra water).
Caring for Neighbors
- Check on elderly neighbors, individuals with disabilities, and families with young children to ensure they are warm and safe.
- Share details about local warming centers or other community resources available during extreme cold.
Emergency Contacts
- Report maintenance issues, such as heating problems, to the Durham Housing Authority Maintenance Team promptly. For Emergency Maintenance call 1-844-RING-DHA (746-4342).
- Save emergency contact information for local services and the DHA Resident Safety Office for quick access.
By taking these simple yet vital precautions, we can work together to ensure everyone stays safe, warm, and well-prepared for winter weather. If you have questions or need support, please don't hesitate to contact the Resident Safety Office.
Stay safe and warm this season!
