DHA and Durham Habitat for Humanity Partner To Build New Affordable Single Family Homes

Today, Durham Housing Authority (DHA) Chief Executive Officer, Anthony Scott, and Durham Habitat for Humanity Executive Director, Blake Strayhorn, announced their plan to construct 37 new affordable single-family homes in Northeast Central Durham. Through a federal program, HOPE VI, DHA sold property to Habitat for Humanity for the construction and sale of these homes. The project also relies on financial assistance from the City of Durham and its efforts to fund the creation and preservation of affordable housing in Durham.

The project, referred to as Edgemont Homeownership, is the last phase of the Few Gardens HOPE VI grant. The homes will be located on two sites, one along Laurel Avenue will consist of twenty-one (21) homes, and the other along North Plum Street and Morning Glory Avenue will consist of sixteen (16) homes. All homes will be affordable to buyers at or below 80% of area median income (AMI), which is currently $67,840 for a family of 4. Each home will be a minimum of 1,200 square feet and will have at least 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Presale Activities will start October 30, 2019, construction December 2019, with the first homes available July 2020.

"Durham is in dire need of more affordable housing. That means subsidized housing for renters, like DHA provides, for nearly 5,000 households in Durham, but it also means affordable opportunities for homeownership," said Scott. "This partnership with Durham Habitat for Humanity is a great example of the approach that Durham needs for affordable housing."

Durham Habitat has built more than 400 homes - including more than 125 in Northeast Central Durham - in partnership with low-income families who buy Habitat homes. "The demand for our affordable housing programs has never been higher," said Strayhorn. "The Edgemont Homeownership program is a game-changer for Durham Habitat. We are grateful for our partnership with the Durham Housing Authority and with the City of Durham, and we are eager to get to work building these 37 much-needed affordable homes in Northeast Central Durham. We are honored to work with DHA to fulfill the promise of HOPE VI as we serve more Durham neighbors."
